Flying ants and termite swarmers can be told apart in about five seconds by looking at three things: the waist, the wings, and the antennae. Termites have a thick, straight-sided body with no visible waist, four wings of equal length, and straight, bead-like antennae. Flying ants have a pinched, narrow waist, two long wings in front and two short ones in back, and antennae that bend at a sharp angle. Get those three details right and you'll know which one you're looking at before you reach for the phone.
